The Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) conducts a detailed personality assessment to select future officers for the Pakistan Armed Forces. Among the most important components of this evaluation are the GTO Outdoor Tests, Group Discussion, and the Deputy President’s Interview. These stages are designed to assess leadership potential, teamwork, communication skills, confidence, and overall officer-like qualities through practical and interactive methods.
GTO Outdoor Tests at ISSB
The GTO outdoor tests are practical field-based assessments where candidates are observed in real-time situations. These tests focus on behavior, cooperation, initiative, planning ability, and physical coordination rather than theoretical knowledge.
Group Tasks
Group tasks involve outdoor problem-solving activities where candidates must collectively cross obstacles while carrying heavy or bulky items under specific rules. Candidates are placed in standardized practical situations to assess teamwork, initiative, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. These tasks help determine whether a candidate’s personality suits the practical role of an officer in the Pakistan Armed Forces. Candidates are divided into groups for these activities.
Progressive Group Task (PGT)
The Progressive Group Task consists of three stages arranged from easy to difficult. A total of 40 minutes is allocated for completion. The group is allowed to move to the next stage only after successfully completing the previous stage with all members.
Half Group Task / Half Group Race
In the Half Group Task, the main group is divided into smaller sub-groups of two or three candidates. This is a single-stage task with a time limit of 8 minutes.
In the Half Group Race, a group of five candidates is formed. They are required to carry specific items while following given restrictions. The items include a dummy, a tyre, a drum, and a rope.
Interview by GTO
Before the command task, a short interview of the candidate is conducted by the GTO. This interview forms part of the overall personality assessment.
Command Task
The command task is a single-stage activity with varying difficulty levels. Each candidate is appointed commander in turn. Six candidates, including the commander, participate at one time. The commander is given 2 minutes to prepare a plan and a total of 8 minutes to present and execute it.
Individual Obstacles
This is the only outdoor task performed individually. It consists of nine simple obstacles that must be completed within 2 minutes. Candidates who complete the obstacles before time may repeat them to earn bonus marks.
Final Group Task (FGT)
The Final Group Task follows the same concept as the Progressive Group Task but consists of only one stage. The time allocated is 20 minutes, and candidates are required to converse in English. Currently, this task is not being conducted.
Mutual Assessment
Although not a direct test, candidates are asked to give their opinions about fellow group members. Candidates are expected to be honest and objective while giving their assessments.
Deputy President’s Group Discussion and Interview
Group Discussion
Group discussions are conducted in an informal setting on given topics. Discussions are held separately in Urdu and English. Previously conducted by the GTO, this responsibility has now been assigned to the Deputy President. Candidates are not required to always support the topic; they may agree or disagree, but their viewpoint must be supported with logical reasoning.
Deputy President’s Interview
The Deputy President conducts a detailed interview of each candidate. This interview is considered a complete test, unlike the short interviews conducted by the Psychologist or GTO, which form only a part of the overall assessment. The interview is conducted in an informal and objective manner. Questions mainly relate to the candidate’s life, academic background, general awareness, social behavior, Islamic knowledge, motivation, comprehension, and general views.
After successfully clearing all the above-mentioned tests, candidates are recommended for commissioning and are called for training at Pakistan Military Academy Kakul, Pakistan Air Force Academy Risalpur, Pakistan Naval Academy Karachi, or various technical colleges.
Conclusion
The GTO outdoor tests, group discussion, and Deputy President’s interview together form a comprehensive evaluation system at ISSB. These stages allow assessors to observe leadership qualities, teamwork, communication skills, confidence, and personality in practical and conversational environments. This structured process ensures the selection of capable and suitable candidates for officer training in the Pakistan Armed Forces.
